FAQ
Do Oway conditioners and masks contain silicones?
Most do not. The one exception in this category is the No-Rinse Moist Conditioner, which contains Amodimethicone — a conditioning silicone that coats the hair shaft to reduce friction and add slip, specifically chosen here because it works without weight on very dry, thick hair. All rinse-out conditioners and rinse-out masks in the range are silicone-free. If you prefer to avoid silicones entirely, every product except the No-Rinse Moist Conditioner is suitable.
Do Oway conditioners and masks contain parabens or synthetic fragrance?
No parabens. Oway uses certified gentle preservatives across the conditioner and mask range. Fragrance comes from essential oils of medicinal plants — not synthetic fragrance compounds.
Are Oway conditioners and masks safe for color-treated hair?
Yes. Several are formulated specifically for color-treated hair: the Color Protection Hair Mask uses antioxidant actives including kakadu plum and goji berry to shield against oxidative fade, and the toning masks (Bluemoon Hair Mask for cool blondes, Sunset Hour Hair Mask for warm blondes) actively deposit pigment to refresh tone between salon visits. The wider range — moisturising, repair, smoothing — is also safe for colored hair, as none contain ingredients known to accelerate fade or disrupt color bonds.
What is the difference between a conditioner and a mask in the Oway range?
Concentration and contact time. Rinse-out conditioners are formulated for quick application and instant detangling — lightweight enough for every-wash use. Hair masks are more concentrated, with higher levels of active botanicals, plant lipids, and proteins designed to penetrate the cortex during a longer leave-on period. Conditioners maintain and protect; masks treat and restore. For hair in good condition, a conditioner after every wash is sufficient. For hair dealing with specific concerns — dryness, damage, frizz, color — a mask used one to two times per week produces the more meaningful functional result.
Which conditioner or mask is best for very dry or damaged hair?
For dry hair, the Moisturising Hair Mask is the deepest hydration option in the range — formulated with pataua oil, murumuru butter, and babassu to saturate very dry, thick, or frizzy hair with essential fatty acids. For structurally damaged hair (from bleaching, chemical processing, or heat), the RebuildM+ Hair Mask uses a high-concentration biomimetic amino acid complex specifically for severely compromised fibers.
Which product should I use for frizzy or unruly hair?
The Silk'n Glow Hair Mask is the dedicated frizz treatment in this range — it uses biodynamic oat and Brazil nut oil to seal the cuticle and add smoothness at the structural level. For a rinse-out conditioner option, the Smoothing Conditioner uses Damask rose and caraway to control frizz and create a polished finish, and works well as a daily step between mask sessions. For curly or wavy hair where frizz is curl-specific rather than dryness-related, the Curly Hair Mask and Curly Hair Combing Cream are the more appropriate starting point.
What is the difference between the Bluemoon and Sunset Hour masks?
Both are colour-depositing toning masks that work by leaving a pigment deposit on the hair shaft during the application period — they condition and tone simultaneously. The difference is the tone direction: Bluemoon Hair Mask deposits cool violet pigment to neutralise brassiness and yellow tones on blonde, white, and grey hair. Sunset Hour Hair Mask deposits warm pigment to refresh and enhance golden, honey, and caramel blonde tones. Using the wrong one will push your colour in the opposite direction from what you want, so the choice depends entirely on whether your target result is cooler or warmer.
Which products are best for curly hair?
Three products are specifically formulated for curly and textured hair. The Curly Hair Deep Mask is a deep conditioning treatment for defined, bouncy curls — use it once or twice a week in place of a standard conditioner. The Curly Hair Combing Cream is dual-purpose: it works as a rinse-out conditioner and as a leave-in pre-styler, detangling without weight and priming curls before air-drying or diffusing. The After-Sun Hair Mask, while not curl-specific, is a practical option after beach or pool exposure when sun, salt, or chlorine has stressed curl structure.
I have color-treated hair but also heat damage. Which mask covers both?
The RebuildM+ Hair Mask is the strongest repair option in the range and suits hair dealing with multiple types of damage simultaneously. Its biomimetic amino acid complex addresses structural fiber damage regardless of origin — chemical, thermal, or mechanical — while its conditioning agents protect against further color fade. For hair that is colored but otherwise healthy, the Color Protection Hair Mask is more appropriate; it focuses on antioxidant protection against oxidative fade rather than structural repair.
Can I use a mask instead of a conditioner every time I wash?
Yes, with some nuance. Masks are generally formulated to be safe for frequent use, and if your hair is very dry or consistently damaged, using a mask at every wash is a reasonable approach. However, some richer masks — particularly the Moisturising Hair Mask and Rebuilding Hair Mask — are designed for concentrated treatment rather than lightweight maintenance, and using them daily on fine or normal hair can lead to buildup or overloading. For daily use across all hair types, the Frequent Use Conditioner and Smoothing Conditioner are calibrated for that frequency. Reserve the more intensive masks for two to three times per week.
What does the No-Rinse Moist Conditioner do differently from a rinse-out conditioner?
It stays in the hair. The No-Rinse Moist Conditioner is a leave-in treatment applied to towel-dried hair after washing and not rinsed out — it hydrates, detangles, and smooths without needing to be removed. Because it remains on the hair, its formula uses a different approach to conditioning: macadamia esters and a multi-protein complex (rice, soy, vegetable) that bind to the hair fiber without residue. It suits very dry, thick, or frizzy hair that benefits from a continuous hydration layer between washes. It also works as a detangling aid on wet hair before combing.
How long should I leave a hair mask on?
Most Oway masks are designed for a minimum of 5–10 minutes under a shower cap to allow the actives to penetrate the cortex with heat. Longer contact — 15–30 minutes — is beneficial for the more intensive repair masks (RebuildM+, Moisturizing) and produces noticeably better results on very damaged or very dry hair. The toning masks (Bluemoon, Sunset Hour) require more careful timing: a longer leave-on deposits more pigment, which can over-tone if left significantly beyond the recommended time. Follow the product guidance on these specifically.
Should I apply conditioner and mask to the scalp or lengths only?
Lengths and ends only, as a general rule. The conditioning agents in both conditioners and masks — particularly cetrimonium and behentrimonium chloride — are designed for the hair shaft, not the scalp. Applied to the scalp, they can weigh down the root, contribute to congestion, and flatten volume. The exception is the Curly Hair Mask and similar curl products where applying from mid-lengths down to the ends and allowing the formula to distribute as the hair dries is part of the intended use. If your scalp is also dry or needs conditioning, that concern is better addressed through a dedicated scalp treatment in the Scalp Care range.
Can I use a conditioner and a mask in the same wash routine?
You can, but it is rarely necessary and can lead to buildup on fine or normal hair. A more efficient approach is to alternate: use a conditioner on light wash days or between mask sessions, and use the mask as a replacement for the conditioner on treatment days rather than layering both. The exception is the No-Rinse Moist Conditioner, which is a leave-in applied after the rinse-out mask has been washed out — these two can be combined as sequential steps in a more intensive treatment routine for very dry or damaged hair.
